Laing O’Rourke builds first HS2 bridge in two days

By Jonathan Campion
The bridge over the M42 in the Midlands is the first permanent structure to be completed under the HS2 scheme...

The work to construct the bridge was carried out by the engineering company Expanded. It was working on behalf of HS2’s contractor, LMJV, which is a joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy and Sons. The work involved the use of a self-propelled modular transporter and concrete deck. It was completed over two days.

Mark Thurston, the CEO of HS2 Ltd, commented: “This new road bridge is the first permanent structure to be installed along the route of Britain’s new railway, so today represents an important milestone for the project and the West Midlands region.

“Constructing the bridge off site and using innovative engineering practices to install it over the motorway enabled us to carry out the work in just two days, keeping disruption to a minimum for road users”.
