Global giant DONG Energy have been permitted to construct the world’s largest offshore windfarm 90km off the Yorkshire coast, which will provide power to over 1.8 million homes within the United Kingdom.

Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy’s UK country chairman, said: “Development consent for Hornsea Project Two is very welcome. We have already invested £6bn in the UK, and Hornsea Project Two provides us with another exciting development opportunity in offshore wind.”

The project, authorised by Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark, will provide over 1,960 new construction jobs and 580 operational and maintenance roles.

“The UK’s offshore wind industry has grown at an extraordinary rate over the last few years, and is a fundamental part of our plans to build a clean, affordable, secure energy system”, Clark said.

"Britain is a global leader in offshore wind, and we're determined to be one of the leading destinations for investment in renewable energy, which means jobs and economic growth right across the country."

Incorporating up to 300 wind turbines, Hornsea Project Two will provide 1.8 gigawatts of power and be situated close to DONG Energy’s Project One windfarm, which is expected to complete by 2020.

DONG Energy are behind three wind projects within Hornsea which are a huge step in developing a sustainable energy source.

"A project of this size will help in our efforts to continue reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind and shows our commitment to investing in the UK", commented Brent Cheshire, Chairman of DONG Energy.

Investment for the project will be approximately £6 billion.
