Iconic builds by infrastructure giant Balfour Beatty
International infrastructure giant Balfour Beatty has recently been awarded the £35 million contract to deliver the first phase of the Perth Transport Futures Project in Scotland, strengthening infrastructures in order to reduce congestion and support economic growth within the region.
From famous builds such as the Olympic Stadium transformation and Heathrow Airport Terminal 2, we look at some the most iconic and diverse projects the company has undertaken as they go from strength to strength.
Blackfriars Station, London
Situated within central London, Blackfriars Station was rebuilt to accommodate one of the busiest rail routes, Thameslink, which runs through two airports, nine underground stations and also runs from Bedford to Brighton.
By replacing the old station with a more secure structure fit for purpose, widening and strengthening of the bridge and altering of the tracks, passengers now have increased access and has relieved some of the increasing pressures within London’s transport system.
Institute of Technical Education, Singapore - $270 million
Awarded “Platinum” within the Singapore Government’s environmental performance scheme, the Institute of Technical Education accommodates over 15,000 students and 630 staff.
Balfour Beatty Investments and Gammon Capital completed the construction using the PPP model developed in the UK, which is expected to last nearly 30 years, incorporating the largest tensile fabric roof in the world at 3,300 square metres.
Zero Carbon Building, Hong Kong - $19 million
Balfour Beatty has provided several infrastructure works within Hong Kong, from building commercial and residential developments, to strengthening transport routes, whether by road, rail or air.
With an increased focus on sustainability and providing green alternatives within construction, Balfour Beatty is responsible for constructing the region’s first zero carbon building in just 11 months, incorporating low carbon materials.
Winning an award from the Hong Kong Green Building Awards in 2012, the build produces more energy than traditional builds. 225MWh of electricity is broken down into 30 percent created from solar panels, alongside the remaining 70 percent which is created from biodiesel. BIM technology was also incorporated to reduce waste.
Greater Gabbard Offshore Transmission, Suffolk, United Kingdom - £317 million.
The Greater Gabbard Offshore Transmission project, built from 2008 - 2012 now powers over 500,000 homes a year, connecting the 504MW Greater Gabbard Wind Farm to the onshore transmission grid.
Situated 23km off the Suffolk coast, the project won Silver in the Best Waste/Energy/Water Project’ category in the 2014 Partnerships Awards
Caltrain Rail Corridor, America - £524 million
This project is the largest contract to be secured by Balfour Beatty within America, which will see the construction of 52 miles of overhead power lines as part of the Caltrain Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project. The project will run from San Francisco to San Jose in order to prepare for future high speed trains which will run on the line, providing an efficient service.
The project is set to commence in the Autumn, with expected completion date to be at the beginning of 2020.

Masdar, PT PLN begin work on floating PV solar project
UAE-based renewable energy company Masdar, in partnership with PT PLN, an organisation specialising in electrical power and owned by the Indonesian government, has announced today it has started work on a floating photovoltaic (PV) solar project in West Java. The company says the 145MW plant is the first of its kind in the country. The project, which will be constructed on the Cirata reservoir in West Java, was financed by the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Societe Generale, and Standard Chartered Bank.
Developing the project is PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Masdar Solar Energi (PMSE), a joint venture between Masdar and PT PLN subsidiary PT PJBI. Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment for the Republic of Indonesia and chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board, said: “This is a flagship project of the UAE’s investment in Indonesia, and most importantly, it is in line with the Indonesian Government’s target to increase renewable energy by 23% by 2025.”
Ladhadalia added: “The Ministry of Investment fully supports the investment realisation of the Cirata Floating Solar Project by PT PJBI and Masdar.” The plant is said to be the largest in south-east Asia, and one of the biggest in the world. Around 800 jobs will be created during its construction phase.
During the project’s development, Masdar has conducted several social initiatives to raise awareness of sustainability and strengthen the engagement of the local community. Talking about the partnership with Masdar, Amir Faisal, president director of PJBI, said: “We see tremendous potential for similar projects in Indonesia and we look forward to continuing our fruitful collaboration with Masdar to work on more renewable energy projects and help our nation achieve its clean energy objectives.
“This floating power project is a first for Indonesia and is also a significant step in PJBI’s renewable energy journey,” he added.

- The cost of solar panels has fallen by 99% since 1977: The price per watt for a single solar cell in 1977 was US$77. Today that same cell costs Us$0.21 per watt US$0.39 per watt for an assembled module, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.
- China is the global leader in solar energy: Whilst solar power is increasing in popularity in the US, China is currently the country with the biggest uptake. Research conducted by GTM in 2017 predicted that the US would install 12.4GW of solar power during that year. China, on the other hand, installed 24.4GW of power in the first half of 2017 alone.
