The project company for the European Brenner Basetunnel has signed a €1bn (£890m) contract with Porr and its joint venture partners to build Lot H51 Pfons-Brenner of the Brenner Basetunnel, which is the largest construction project in Austrian history.
The construction team includes Porr subsidiary Hinteregger and Italian contractors Condotte and Itinera.
Construction works on the Brenner Base Tunnel in Wolf/Steinach will begin imminently. The construction period will be around six years, with an order volume of approximately €1bn.

The construction phase for lot H51 involves building two main tunnel tubes between Pfons and Brenner, around nine kilometres of exploratory shafts, and the emergency zone at St. Jodok. The two main, single-track tunnel tubes will primarily be driven with tunnel boring machines (TBMs) with an excavation diameter of 10.37 m – this means that a stretch of up to 30 metres can be driven per day and per TBM. The excavation of the exploratory tunnel will be excavated by drill & blast method and secured with shotcrete. The entire lot will be supplied via a single access tunnel.
PORR’s tunnelling experience includes driving more than 600 km of tunnels and the Group has already built an exploratory and access tunnel for the Brenner Basetunnel.
