ARADA, developer of the Aljada mixed lifestyle megaproject in Sharjah, UAE, has awarded a contract to the Modern Building Contracting Company (MBCC) to kick off the first phase of construction.

The work involves the building of four apartment blocks which will house 250 units and span 24mn sq ft.

MBCC has worked on several large projects across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and will begin working on the Areej Apartment blocks by the end of this month.

HE Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of ARADA, said: “This award is an important milestone for Aljada as we move into the development phase of this iconic and transformational project.

“We’re pleased to be partnering with Modern Building Contracting Company, and look forward to working closely with them to help deliver Aljada’s first homes.”

In total, the Aljada project will cost around $6.5bn to complete and once finished will house hotels, apartments and leisure facilities.

In terms of architecture work, Zaha Hadid Architects won a global competition in March to design the Central Hub area, a new entertainment hub for the region.

The entire project is expected to be completed by 2025, with many of the residential units already sold.
