Construction begins on Statoils Johan Sverdrup riser platform in Norway
International energy company Statoil has announced that construction works for the Johan Sverdrup riser platform in Stord, north of Stavenger in Norway have now commenced at the Samsung Heavy Industries yard in South Korea. The overall project consists of Statoil, Petoro, Det norske oljeselskap, Lundin Norway and Maersk Oil.
The aim of the riser platform will be to obtain land-based power, which will then be fully functionable for over fifty years, ensuring sustainability in exporting oil and gas to Mongstad and Kårstø from the Johan Sverdrup reservoir. The platform will be the largest of four, with a total weight of 23,000 tones, with dimensions of 124 metres (length), 28 metres (width) and 42 metres (height).
Johan Sverdrup Project Director Kjetel Digre said: "As we are starting the riser platform construction, we are taking another important step in delivering the Johan Sverdrup project on schedule.” Samsung Heavy Industries will supply decks for both process and riser platforms, at which Margareth Øvrum, Executive Vice President for Technology, Projects and Drilling at Statoil said: “Samsung has extensive experience in manufacturing such installations and we already have a good collaboration with the supplier. They have provided a competitive bid in a tough international competition.”
