Spac, a subsidiary of Gallic civil engineer Colas, has carried out the first site trials of Volvo Construction Equipment’s new electric compact excavator.

Spac will be using the 2.5-tonne ECR25 excavator to dig trenches at the Saint-Nom-la Bretèche golf course, outside Paris. Spac site manager Benjamin Silvent said: “For residents and cities in general, it makes our worksites more acceptable because it limits carbon emissions and noise disturbance.”

Volvo Construction Equipment(Volvo CE) electric compact excavator project manager Elodie Guyot, commented: “It’s exciting for us to see this machine at a client’s construction site. It’s in a very quiet and peaceful area where residents want that quietness and peacefulness to be respected so it’s crucial to have a machine that meets this need.”

Volvo CE is aiming to catch up with the likes of JCB. The company recently announced it had gone into full production with its first battery-powered excavator, with a strong order book across Europe and North America.

The ECR25 Electric was originally unveiled in May alongside the L25 Wheel Loader at BAUMAin Munich. Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is committed to delivering on its vision of 'Building Tomorrow' with its first commercial zero-emissions electric compact excavator and wheel loader at bauma Munich.

The machines deliver zero exhaust emissions, significantly lower noise levels, reduced energy costs, offer improved efficiency and less maintenance requirements, compared to their conventional counterparts. From mid-2020, Volvo CE will begin to launch its range of electric compact excavators (EC15 to EC27) and wheel loaders (L20 to L28), stopping new diesel engine-based development of these models.
