IronPlanet is bringing eBay to the construction industry as it starts up its own online platform for the buying and selling of used equipment.

The new service, allEquip, while not adopting an auction practice, has ‘buy now’ prices similar to the ‘buy-it-now’ option seen on eBay. All equipment listed for sale undergoes an inspection to ensure honesty and value for money.

An inspection report will appear under a photo of the product in question alongside a rating on the item’s condition, based on general appearance to the finer details within a particular machine. This is done on a four-star scale and is backed by a 100 percent guarantee.

The whole payment process is coordinated through the site, meaning no cheques in the post or requests for payments into suspicious bank accounts.

The launch of allEquip is part of CEO Greg Owen’s desire to make IronPlanet swing from online auctioneer to a multi-solution online commercial arena.

On top of an auction service, the company also offers online trading, which offers a broker-type service to match buyers and sellers for equipment types—such as high-ticket cranes—where it doesn’t make sense to put the machines in an auction.

TruckPlanet is another of its platforms performing this function.
